“If you have a job without any aggravations, you don’t have a job.” – Malcolm Forbes
Does earning US $105,000 for 6 months just swimming by the reefs and relaxing by the shore sounds good to you? It sure is for me! This is the job that is being touted as the best job in the world.
The tourism department of Australia’s Queensland state announced last Monday that they are going to hire one lucky person to be the caretaker of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef for six months. No educational background needed, open even to non-Australian citizen and best of all no worries about spending money there since it’s going to be an all expense paid vacation living in paradise. Your work will just be to inform the whole world of your adventures on the island in a weekly basis through an online blog.
The big question now is: what’s the catch?
Nothing.
According to the Tourism minister they created this job to promote the Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to tourists and vacationers. Due to the world financial crisis, even their tourists spots are being affected since less visitors come and visit. So to attract people again and create world awareness, they needed to market their tourist spot.
DARN THEY’RE GOOD!
In just one day, the website islandreefjob.com crashed due to 850,000 visits on it. What could be more effective than viral marketing to generate traffic to their site? The knowledge that one lucky person could live in paradise for 6 months and even gets paid for doing it, sends millions of people around the world excited.
Imagine the money this kind of traffic could bring. Great marketing of it could provide the tourism department more money than the US $105k they will shell out. Genius isn’t it?
Right now i would bet that many people know more about Australia’s Great Barrier Reef than their own country’s tourist spots. I would even add to the bet that many people have been curious about the barrier reef that they already visited the island even before the end of the application period.
Care to take the bet with me?

WOW; I didn’t think of it from that perspective! You’re right though, the traffic alone to the site could’ve generated tens of thousands of dollars, even millions of dollars with all of the clicking around there, to adsense, bidvertiser, and the advertisers I know who jumped in on that one! Great scheme!!!
And to the fortunate person who snatches up that job, spend the money wisely when you get back home…lol!
